4 Mobile GPS Apps for People That Lose Everything (infographic)

Did you know the "You Are Here" sticker that indicates your position on a map actually has a name — it's called an ideo locator. In the analog world these indicators let you orient yourself to your surroundings and give you a better shot at finding things in relation to your current, fixed location.

But in the digital world, an ideo locator is useless. Most digital devices and most people are on the go, not fixed in a single location. So some enterprising companies have developed solutions that help you to keeps tabs on and to find devices, phones and laptops.

I’ve listed a few of the best below:

Pixie Technology (4 for $39.95)

Pixie’s goal is to bring the physical and digital world together by zeroing in on lost objects down to the inch, even through walls. Pixie works with a mobile app using augmented reality to identify exactly where those keys are hidden. Simply affix a Pixie to any just about anything (remote controls, keys and even pet collars) and locate it using your phone. I’ve been helping with their beta release, and Pixie is an organizers dream solution.

Find My Device (free)

Apple has a little known free app that allows you to find your iPhone, iPad or Mac with their free GPS service. It does require activation and you must adjust the settings on your device, but once it’s enabled it will allow you to instantly locate your device.

Where’s My Droid (Free and $3.99 for premium features)

Using Android’s location service, this app helps you find lost phones and tablets, and allows you to wipe your data if the phone is stolen. As long as there is a connection to the internet and battery power, this free app works well.

Lojack for Laptops (Starts at $29.99 a year)

Just like its car finding cousin, Lojack for Laptops helps you monitor, manage, secure and recover mobile computers. Lojack’s using a remote data and device security to prevent use of a lost laptop and map a laptop’s location. Their service includes a dedicated theft recovery team that works with local law enforcement to track your stolen laptop.
